June is the Wound Healing Awareness Month!

This annual celebration was created to recognize the challenges experienced by individuals whose lives are affected daily by chronic wounds and also increase awareness of how specialized care can save limbs and lives.

Chronic nonhealing wounds, or those that do not progress through healing in a timely manner, are a major public health challenge.[1][2]

  • It is estimated that the prevalence of chronic wounds in developed countries is 1% to 2% of the general population[3], similar to the prevalence of heart failure. However, unlike heart failure, the consequences and costs of chronic wounds, including amputation and death, do not receive the same level of attention from a public policy standpoint in the United States.[3]
  • Due to the aging population and increasing rates of obesity and diabetes mellitus globally, the prevalence of chronic wounds are predicted to increase. [2]
