We have a diabetic with multiple comorbidities that has a surgical chronic wound from a spinal surgery. Has anyone done HBO for this type of wound in this location?

Hi Christine

Thank you for your question, our team briefly discussed it. Not sure if this fits the case, but there are case series suggesting that adjunctive HBOT can be beneficial for uncomplicated surgical site infections/wounds following spinal surgery, particularly within two months post-operation. You can find more details on treatment protocols in this article: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32889196/.

Of note, from an insurance coverage perspective, chronic wounds or surgical wounds are not a CMS covered indication for HBOT. In cases related to diabetes, the wound must be a diabetic foot ulcer that meets CMS requirements in order for HBOT to be reimbursed.

Hope this helps!

Thank you! I will check out the first article, but we are farther than two months away from surgical date. Always good to learn new things.
