Enzymatic debridement relies on the use of enzymes to remove dead tissue. Enzymatic debridement is a technique that removes dead tissue more slowly than debridement with a scalpel (sharp or surgical debridement). The technique is often used in patients who cannot tolerate sharp debridement or to complement sharp debridement. Under Medicare, the cost of the enzymatic debridement agent is included in the debridement service. In other cases in which you need to purchase it separately, you will need a prescription from your provider to purchase it from a pharmacy or manufacturers.
