Debridement is important to promote wound healing. Debridement is the process through which clinicians remove dead tissue and foreign materials from wounds. Dead tissue may be of different colors: black, gray, yellow or white. There are several methods of wound debridement, and debridement with larvae is one of them.

Rapid debridement can be achieved in as little as one treatment with disinfected larvae. Larvae are instinctively selective and eat only the dead tissue of a wound. They are precise, clean, quick and clinically effective. Although debridement with disinfected larvae can be a good solution for healthy and natural wound debridement, psychological and aesthetic concerns are understandable in contemporary culture. They either come loose and can be placed under a bandage, or come trapped in bandages. Patients need to consult their clinicians before opting for this type of debridement.

Disinfected larvae for debridement are regulated by the FDA as a prescription medical device. Under Medicare, the cost of the larvae is included in the debridement service. In other cases in which you need to purchase them separately, you will need a prescription from your provider to purchase this device directly from the manufacturer.  Maggots are prepared upon order; they are highly perishable and cannot be stored, reused, or returned.
