Hydrogel dressings are mostly formed by water or glycerin and therefore can provide a moist environment to dry wounds. An optimal amount of moisture is essential for adequate wound healing. These dressings cannot absorb fluid and should not be used on wounds that produce large quantities of fluid, on active bleeding or on infected wounds. Hydrogels are available in two forms: amorphous and fixed. Amorphous hydrogel can be easily applied and removed. They can easily mold to and fill a wound cavity space. Fixed hydrogels are thin, flexible sheets. Almost all hydrogels require another dressing on top.
