Wound Reference does not produce, market, re-sell or distribute health care goods or services consumed by, or used on, patients.

Attention to basic nutrition and appropriate supplements may assist in the healing of chronic wounds. Persons with chronic wounds may have other conditions that lead to loss of appetite, and large quantities of protein can be lost in wound fluids every day. These will lead to deficiency of micronutrients such as calcium, iron, folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12. Wound healing is delayed in persons with moderate to severe malnutrition.

Protein and caloric deficits must be replaced and micronutrients should be supplemented in patients with malnutrition. Zinc and vitamin C are recommended supplements in persons with wounds due to the central role in collagen metabolism and inflammation. Vitamin A has a unique role in the management of the patient treated with corticosteroids. Arginine and glutamine supplementation may be helpful but only if protein and calories are present in adequate quantities in the diet.
