Cleansing is a vital component of wound care. Cleansing a wound helps remove debris and germs that impair the healing process. Cleansers are solutions used to cleanse a wound. They can be antimicrobial or non-antimicrobial. Non-antimicrobial cleansers are free of chemicals known as antiseptics and antibiotics. Antiseptics and antibiotics slow down the growth of germs but may also compromise the wound healing process. Thus, latest clinical research recommends cleaning wounds with high quality (drinkable) water, sterile water or saline solutions.
Wound Cleansers or Irrigating Solutions for wounds are non-covered under the Medicare Part B surgical dressing benefit. People with Medicare Part B (beneficiaries) who need to change surgical dressings at their homes and who are not being cared for by a home health agency may have specific types of dressings covered by Medicare. Dressings and supplies need to be considered medically necessary for treatment of a surgical or surgically treated wound. Medicare has guidelines that establish what is considered medically necessary and how often an item can be used
